If you’ve recently moved to Simcoe County or are thinking of making a move and are wondering what the rules are for lighting fireworks and bonfires and what events are happening for the upcoming Victoria Day weekend, you’ve come to the right place.

Your Victoria Day Weekend Quick Tip and Resource Guide for Outdoor Burning and Fireworks in Barrie, Midland, and Orillia

The anticipated warmer weather has arrived along with the first long weekend and the unofficialstart of Summer 2019! This coming weekend is a time when families head to open cottages or visit family and friends. Celebrating the end of the cold season is routinely done with outdoor campfires and fireworks.

We hope everyone will enjoy this time while keeping safe and having fun. On that note, we’ve put together some quick tips as well as links to a few resources on regulations for fireworks and bonfires in Barrie, Orillia, and Midland.

Quick Tips: Fireworks

  • Do buy your fireworks from dependable sources and follow the instructions on labels
  • Do keep fireworks out of reach of children and set them off at a safe distance from viewers
  • Do bury your fireworks in a bucket half-filled with sand, or ensure they are securely in the ground before flareup
  • Do keep a source of water on hand to diffuse sparklers and fireworks that continue to smoulder
  • Don’t lean over fireworks to ignite them; light them from an arm’s length away

Quick Tips: Burning

  • Do make sure you can burn in your area and acquire any permits if required
  • Do use the proper form of burning set out by your City’s regulations
  • Do clear the area of any dry leaves or sticks and move any other burnable items a safe distance away
  • Do keep extra wood stacked away from the fire
  • Do keep your fire small and contained. Start with small pieces of wood, gradually building up to larger pieces and use another piece of wood to shift fragments around
  • Don’t use flammable liquids such as gas to ignite the fire and keep a bucket of water and a fire extinguisher nearby to thoroughly drown the fire when you are finished
